Clear AI Agent Instructions: Status Update or Action Request?
Separate completed actions from new requests. Practical examples for resets, uploads, and exports, plus the limits of wording alone.
“The reset is done; continue” describes a completed action. “Reset now; continue” can sound like a new instruction. When an AI agent can execute tools, separate what has already happened from what you want it to do next.
A September 7 user report describes an additional reset being consumed after a manual reset and a follow-up message. The post does not establish a general bug or expose the full execution history. It does illustrate an ambiguity worth avoiding in your own instructions.
A simple pattern: status, request, boundary
Use three short statements:
Status: I already redeemed the available reset myself.
Request: Check current usage, then continue the existing task if the allowance permits it.
Boundary: Do not redeem another reset or buy credits.
This is a suggested writing pattern from LinkLoot, not an official OpenAI command syntax. It may reduce misunderstandings, but it does not guarantee correct behavior from every agent or tool.
Examples beyond usage resets
After uploading a file yourself: “The file is already uploaded. Only check whether it appears in the list.” This describes a verification task rather than another upload.
After publishing a post yourself: “The post is already live. Open the public page and check its title and links.” If something needs changing, specify that scope separately.
After an apparently failed export: “First check whether an output file exists. Create another export only if no successful output is present.” Whether the agent can perform that check depends on its available tools and permissions.
Wording does not replace technical controls
When a tool consumes credits or publishes data, its interface should make the consequence clear. Use the confirmation and permission controls the product actually provides. A sentence in a conversation is not a substitute for an enforced access restriction.
If an unexpected action occurs, inspect the history, note the operation and time, and verify the actual account balance or external result. An agent's statement alone is not proof that an action executed successfully.
Read the allowance before acting
The OpenAI documentation points to the usage dashboard and /status in the CLI for current limits. Start with those displays. The LinkLoot Reset Calendar covers public special-reset signals and cannot access your individual credits.
If you are unsure whether the problem is a limit, an outage, or an unexpected action, the AI troubleshooting assistant helps classify it without changing your account.
