OpenAI launches dots, an always-on agent with a cloud computer

OpenAI has launched dots, persistent agents designed to continue delegated work between conversations using a cloud computer, browser and connected services. The company says dots run on GPT-6 Astra and can research, analyze data, prepare documents and build software. The launch is a substantial move from chat-based assistance toward agents that retain work context and follow up over time.

A persistent agent with its own cloud workspace

A dot can keep working while a user's devices are off, track progress and return with results or questions that need a decision. OpenAI says it can use background agents in parallel and decide when to pause and resume. Its cloud computer is separate from the user's own devices and browser sessions, so work can happen without leaving a personal computer running.

Users may also connect one personal computer, which must be online with the ChatGPT desktop app open for the dot to access its files, apps and tasks. That local connection is distinct from the dot's cloud environment.

Apps and communication channels are separate permissions

OpenAI documents connections to supported plugins such as Gmail, Google Drive and GitHub, as well as messaging through Slack and Microsoft Teams. Connecting a channel does not automatically grant access to those apps or a local computer. The dot's actions remain subject to each service's permissions; the controls documentation describes proactive research as read-only, while follow-up actions require applicable authorization.

This separation matters in practice: adding a dot to a Slack channel does not by itself make it monitor the channel. Users must tell it which channels or events to watch. OpenAI also says that, before sharing information from a private conversation with others, the dot checks that sharing was allowed.

Gradual access, with desktop setup first

OpenAI says dots are rolling out gradually to eligible accounts, subject to plan, region and workspace requirements. The setup guide starts in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser; mobile web is not supported. Mobile-app conversations depend on a supporting update. Specific availability can therefore differ by account and location, and the documentation should be checked in the user's own workspace.

The practical change

Dots bring long-running delegation, cloud execution and existing app integrations into one agent experience. That could reduce repeated setup for multi-step work, but the documented access controls and gradual rollout are part of the product, not incidental details. Before connecting accounts or assigning consequential tasks, users should confirm what each integration can access and what actions it can take.
