Codex Usage Limit Reached: What to Do With an Unfinished Task

If Codex shows a usage limit while you are working, check the affected account's usage meter first. A regular allowance window, a publicly announced special reset, and additional credits are different things. Starting a fresh task does not resolve that distinction.

Does Codex always stop work at the limit?

A user report from September 7, 2026 describes an interrupted task. That is not enough to establish a universal product rule. The OpenAI documentation, checked on September 7, says an active turn can continue when the usage limit is reached, subject to fair use limits. An active turn is not necessarily an entire project with unlimited follow-up requests.

If your experience differs, record the time, exact message, and affected task. Those details help support investigate the specific case. These sources do not support the blanket claim that Codex now always stops ongoing work.

Preserve an unfinished task in three steps

1. Inspect the actual results. Which files changed? Which tests really ran? Is an export, commit, or external action already complete? Look at the artifacts instead of assuming the task either did everything or did nothing.
2. Save a handoff note. If the model cannot produce another response, write down the goal, completed work, remaining steps, and last error yourself. Keep that note with the project files.
3. Resume from the existing state. Ask the agent to inspect what is already present before making changes. A blind restart can overwrite useful work or repeat an external action.

Limit or technical problem?
