Cursor Router ships model routing controls for Teams and Enterprise
Cursor Router is now generally available for Teams and Enterprise, routing coding-agent requests across models with cost, balance, and intelligence modes plus admin controls.
Cursor has made Cursor Router generally available for Teams and Enterprise, turning Auto mode into a request-level model router rather than a simple model choice. The change matters for teams already paying for coding agents at frontier-model rates: Cursor says the router can send routine work to cheaper models while reserving stronger models for harder tasks.
The rollout is not just a user-facing picker. Cursor's changelog says Teams get it on by default, while Enterprise admins can enable it from the dashboard and control who can use each routing mode.
Cursor Router changes the model choice from manual to per-request
Cursor describes Router as a classifier that analyzes each coding request and chooses an underlying model for the job. The product pitch is straightforward: many developers pick one premium model as their daily driver, even when the task is a small edit, a UI tweak, or a short question. Router tries to make that decision at request time.
There are three optimization modes. Cost aims for the strongest available answer under a spend constraint. Balance targets strong everyday quality. Intelligence is the high-capability lane for work that would otherwise justify expensive frontier models. Admin controls make this a platform policy change
The bigger workflow change is in governance. Cursor says admins can enable Router per team or group, restrict available modes, set a default mode, and allow or block underlying models. The routed model can also be displayed or hidden; Cursor's changelog says it is hidden by default.
That gives engineering leaders a new policy surface. A team can standardize on Auto, hide routing complexity from most developers, and still limit which models are available under the hood. The tradeoff is transparency. If the routed model is hidden, debugging quality regressions, latency changes, or compliance questions may require admins to expose more detail than the default UI shows.
What teams should verify before standardizing on Auto
Cursor Router is available across desktop, web, iOS, CLI, and the Cursor SDK, according to the official changelog. That broad surface makes it more than a desktop-editor tweak, especially for teams that already run agents through CLI or SDK workflows.
Before making it the default, teams should check four things in their own environment:
- Whether routed-model visibility should be enabled for auditability.
- Whether any model block list conflicts with Cursor's required routing options.
