OpenAI expands journalism support from classrooms to newsrooms

OpenAI is expanding its journalism initiative beyond newsroom experimentation to journalism education. For the 2026–2027 academic year, the company says it will provide more than 400 ChatGPT Edu subscriptions to interested graduate students and faculty at CUNY’s Newmark J-School and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.

The program combines access with training, partnerships, shared learning, and practical support. That makes the announcement relevant to journalism schools and publishers deciding how AI skills should enter reporting workflows—and where human editorial judgment must remain in control.

What OpenAI is giving journalism schools

The first two partners are the Tow-Knight Center for Journalism Futures at Newmark and the Knight Lab at Medill. OpenAI says students will use the tools to explore research, data analysis, brainstorming, new storytelling formats, and other newsroom workflows. The company also stresses that access alone is insufficient: students need to understand limitations, responsible use, and the role of reporters, editors, producers, and newsroom leaders.

The offer is limited to the named institutions and interested graduate students and faculty. It is not a general free ChatGPT Edu program for journalism students everywhere. OpenAI’s footnote says ChatGPT Edu workspaces provide enterprise-level privacy, permissions, and administrative controls, and that workspace data is not used to train its models.

OpenAI is extending an existing newsroom network

The education push sits alongside longer-running partnerships. OpenAI says its renewed American Journalism Project partnership gives more than 50 portfolio news organizations the opportunity to access ChatGPT Enterprise and API credits. It also cites support for the Lenfest Institute’s AI Collaborative and Fellowship program, plus WAN-IFRA’s Newsroom AI Catalyst accelerator, which the company says has served more than 165 newsrooms across multiple regions.

Those figures describe opportunities and program reach, not guaranteed adoption or measurable editorial outcomes. Newsrooms still need to evaluate accuracy, provenance, privacy, copyright, security, and the risk that automation changes reporting priorities. The announcement does not establish a universal product entitlement, a new model release, or a general pricing change.

Why the CUNY partnership matters

CUNY Newmark’s independent description of the Tow-Knight Center supports the partnership’s institutional fit: the center focuses on journalism in an AI-mediated information landscape, runs workshops and trainings, and works with newsrooms on innovation projects. It also lists AI Innovation Internships planned for fall 2026.

That context points to the practical objective. OpenAI is trying to place its tools inside the training pipeline before students enter professional newsrooms, while using journalism institutions to surface workable practices and failure modes. The company says additional phases are being developed across the journalism education and industry ecosystem; their scope and eligibility remain to be announced.
