GitHub now lets Copilot Business and Enterprise members request more AI budget after exhausting their included credits, with owners and billing managers approving the increase from settings.

GitHub Copilot Business and Enterprise members can now ask for more AI budget when they exhaust their usage-based credits. Organization owners, enterprise owners, and billing managers can approve, adjust, or deny the request from GitHub settings, restoring access immediately after approval.

What GitHub changed in Copilot billing

Previously, reaching the available AI-credit limit blocked Copilot features that consumed credits. The new request flow appears at the point of exhaustion and routes the request to the account responsible for the budget: an organization or an enterprise.

Approvers can open “Requests from members,” set the new amount, and choose Approve and increase. GitHub says the member’s budget updates immediately, so the user can resume credit-consuming Copilot features without waiting for the next billing period.

Who can use the request flow

The change applies to GitHub Copilot Business and GitHub Copilot Enterprise plans using usage-based billing. It is an administrative control, not a general increase to every member’s included allowance. Teams still decide whether extra usage is approved and how much additional budget is available.

That distinction matters for organizations that use premium models, agent runs, or other metered Copilot features. A request can restore access, but it can also increase the organization’s bill. Owners should review the account that pays for the budget before approving requests at scale.

Practical checks for Copilot administrators

Before enabling a larger allowance, confirm which organization or enterprise owns the budget, who receives approval requests, and which metered products share the same spending controls. GitHub’s documentation also describes separate budget settings for controlling usage across metered products.

For developers, the operational change is simple: hitting the limit no longer has to mean waiting for a reset if an authorized administrator approves more capacity. For finance and platform teams, the workflow adds a human approval point, but it does not remove the need for monitoring.

Source check

GitHub’s September 16 changelog entry is the primary source for the rollout and supported plans. Independent coverage from Xebia’s Microsoft-focused Tech Hub reports the same approval flow and affected Copilot tiers. Neither source establishes a universal quota increase; the feature is a request-and-approval path under usage-based billing.
